One must plan a trip to Nepal during the Holi festival and grab the opportunity to enjoy the colors of Holi. For a brief introduction, Holi is also known as “FaguPurnima” as it is celebrated on the full moon day of the Nepalese Falgun month (usually from February to March according to the Solar Calendar). As per Hindu mythology, this festival is celebrated for the conquest of good over evil and also the start of the spring season. The demoness Holika was burnt and destroyed in the fire set by herself to kill Prince Prahlad but got burnt herself to death. Hence, a bonfire is set up in this Holi festival. Holi is the festival of colors. From Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna likes to play pranks on the girls (Gopinis) by splashing water and colors.
People usually celebrate Holi by smearing different colored powders over each others’ faces, splashing colored water, having parties, dancing to traditional music, and drinking a traditional drink, Bhaang (a paste made from the Cannabis plants) mixed with lassi. Different types of sweets are made during Holi but the main sweet item is “Gujhiya” which is made of dried milk powder and crushed nuts. During Holi, they dance and enjoy different food items. It is recommended to wear old clothes in Holi as you will end up drenched in water, paint, and different colors all over you and your clothes. Also, it is suggested to apply hair oil or coconut oil over the skin before playing Holi, to prevent the color from absorbing into the skin and the colors will wash off easily. Holi Tour in Nepal will be a wonderful experience but one must be careful as sometimes smearing colors and splashing colorful water might be harmful.
